Food Waste Tracking
Food Waste Tracking
Ready. Set. Record!
For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.

Storage
Berries
To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 2 packs of berries.
Storage
Bananas
To keep bananas from browning quickly, break up the bunch and separate. Don’t store bananas with apples, which speed up ripening. If the stems came covered in plastic wrap, do not remove the plastic until ready to eat as this will slow the release of ethylene gas. I will properly store 5 bananas.
Storage
Fridge Demystified
Did you know that milk should never be stored in the side door of a fridge? Learn where to properly store food in your fridge by checking out the Resource. I will properly store 1 cartons of milk.
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
Five bananas for $1 is a good deal only if you eat all five. Many stores offer the sale price even if you buy less than the stated quantity.
Shopping
Support Imperfection
20 billion pounds of fruits and veggies go to waste on farms every year, often because they don't live up to the cosmetic standards of grocery stores. Buy ugly produce at the grocery store, farmers market, or sign up for an ugly produce CSA box.
Shopping
Shop More Often
Grocery shop more often, and buy fresh foods in smaller quantities.
Shopping
Keep it Local
Purchase local, seasonal produce, which will likely stay fresh longer as it was picked more recently than supermarket produce.
Shopping
Shop the Bulk Bins
Grains, nuts, and other dry goods are often sold in bulk bins that allow you to purchase only the quantity you need.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Cooking
Veggie Scrap Stock
Store vegetable scraps in your freezer and use them to make veggie stock. I will make this recipe 2 times.

Bob Coleman 2/07/2021 10:30 PMI started a new bag of items to make stock and store it in the freezer, great way to use onion skins. -
Bob Coleman 2/05/2021 8:41 PMJust harvested the last of the second round of broccoli. After the main head is cut off, smaller shoots grow, we picked the rest of them today. -
Bob Coleman 5/21/2020 10:50 PMEnjoyed home grown tomatoes in my lunchtime salad, today, directly from the vine to the salad.-
Sarah Feteih 5/22/2020 11:49 AMGetting closer to our food sources by growing it ourselves is a fantastic way to curb waste. Great job, Bob!

Bob Coleman 2/24/2020 9:01 AMBackyard broccoli - just harvested this! It is a big one too! When you cut the head off, keep your plant in the ground new growth will continue to harvest more broccoli. -
Bob Coleman 2/23/2020 12:12 PMHarvesting broccoli from our backyard garden this week. Also harvested cherry tomatoes from a 1.5 year old plant and lemons from the neighbors tree that hangs over the fence. Nothing like backyard food, no pesticides and grown in compost-rich soil!!! -
Bob Coleman 1/23/2020 5:48 PMBagel Lovers - Buy from the bin (you get to pick them out), slice and freeze them, then take out when you are ready to eat one, two, three or more. Let them defrost or just toast them - they stay fresh and no waste!-
Sarah Feteih 1/24/2020 10:11 AMWhat a great suggestion, Bob! Shopping the bulk bins is a great strategy for reducing food waste.
