Planning

Date Labels Demystified

I will not toss food once it is past the best buy date. "Expiration" dates misleadingly refer to quality, not safety. Use your senses and best judgement.

COMPLETED 4

Storage

Potatoes

Store potatoes with an apple to avoid early sprouting. Keep them away from onions and in a cool, dark place. I will properly store 6 potatoes.

I think things are going fairly well. I'm trying for less leftovers but when I have them, if I don;t eat them the next day, I freeze them and give them to my elderly mom. As far as fresh veggies, some gets processed for my daughter's bearded dragon, some may go to feed the ducks at the local pond and if they can't eat them, the remains go into our yard waste to be composted. I'm trying to use more reusable storage containers instead of storage bags. And I seem to be buying less food cause my daughter has commented that she liked that the frig doesn't look as full and I cook our food every day!

Been trying to find extra ways to use left over fruit/veg. I've been cutting some up and feeding the ducks at the Chula Vista Golf Course.

This is a great idea, Patti! You're perfectly demonstrating the strategies of the Food Recovery Hierarchy: if food waste can't be reduced at the source or used to feed people, the next best strategy is using it to feed animals.

Started tracking my food waste yesterday. Set up my scale, got a light weight plastic bowl to hold the food. Ready to go!
