Jennifer's actions
Food Systems
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Storage
Apples
Store apples up to 7 days on the counter, then move them to the refrigerator. Keep them away from bananas and avocados as they speed ripening. I will properly store 3 apples.
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
Five bananas for $1 is a good deal only if you eat all five. Many stores offer the sale price even if you buy less than the stated quantity.
Food Systems
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Community
Train Like a Chef
I will watch 1 online classes on "Creating a Full Use Kitchen" through the James Beard Foundation.
Community
Watch Save The Food San Diego Videos
I will watch 2 Save the Food San Diego videos.
Cooking
Cook From Root to Leaf
Utilize beet greens, carrot tops, and herb stems to make a delicious pesto, sauce, or dressing. I will try 1 root-to-leaf recipes.
Cooking
Save the Peels
When life gives you lemons (or any other citrus peels), use the rinds to make a nontoxic cleaner.
Planning
Eat Me First
I will create an "Eat Me First" area in my fridge to prioritize food that needs to be used right away.
Planning
Gleaning
I will glean backyard produce and create a recipe plan for full utilization, i.e. sharing with friends, canning, preserving, etc.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Storage
Nuts
Without the shell, nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans can stay in the freezer for 2 years or more. Pack into tinted zip-top freezer bags and freeze. I will properly store 2 bags of nuts.
Storage
Berries
To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 1 packs of berries.
Storage
Bananas
To keep bananas from browning quickly, break up the bunch and separate. Don’t store bananas with apples, which speed up ripening. If the stems came covered in plastic wrap, do not remove the plastic until ready to eat as this will slow the release of ethylene gas. I will properly store 3 bananas.
Food Waste Tracking
Food Waste Tracking
Ready. Set. Record!
For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.

Jennifer Hart 11/19/2020 1:25 PMToday, I made a leftover mash-up with a homemade broccoli salad, pasta, curry powder, Bragg’s amino’s & extra spicy Indian pepper. Oh, mercy! It was delicious! Boyfriend commented, “It has everything you’d want in a dish! It really tastes like a purposeful recipe. Mmm, mmm, mmm!” And her inhaled it. Haha. That’s great feedback 😊 -
Jennifer Hart 11/10/2020 2:57 PMAnyone else feeling extremely motivated to start composting? Haven’t started mine up again & my boyfriend is VERY determined to have our fruit & veggie scraps (or nut shells) going into compost vs trash. Yay! Thanks for helping to convert him 😍 -
Jennifer Hart 11/10/2020 9:44 AMOur refrigerator died this weekend :( We were grateful we’d already started keeping less perishables on hand! Some cheese didn’t survive (RIP) but everything else is looking good so far 😄-
Jennifer Hart 11/11/2020 8:40 PMUpdate: Sadly, some other refrigerated items didn’t survive the cooler situation. It was painful to put them all in the food waste bin! :(
