Welcome to the Save the Food San Diego Ecochallenge
If you took a look inside America’s landfills, you’d find that our trash is full of food. Every year, 40% of food produced is thrown away, where it decomposes and contributes to climate change. This isn’t just something that happens in restaurants and grocery stores - 43% of all wasted food in the United States comes from households. When we waste food, we’re also wasting the resources - like land, water, and energy - used to produce that food. Food waste impacts the environment, the economy, and our communities.
But you can make a difference.
The Save the Food San Diego Ecochallenge, a program fully funded by the CalRecycle Food Waste Prevention & Rescue grant, aims to raise awareness about the problem of food waste and provide you with tips, tricks, and strategies to reduce food waste by 10% in our target population. Six partner organizations throughout San Diego county have been selected to participate in the Save The Food San Diego Ecochallenge - 2 corporate campuses, 2 university campuses, and 2 jurisdictions. Participants will receive their own food scales to weigh and record their food waste for one week at the beginning of each Ecochallenge.
We want you to track your food waste, share your progress, and earn points for taking action. Learn about meal planning, proper storage techniques, and smart shopping strategies for a life with less waste. The combination of collective inspiration, camaraderie and friendly competition makes change a little easier - and a lot more fun.
Take the challenge with the Save the Food San Diego Ecochallenge.
