Community
Let's Get Social
I will share a Save The Food social media post.
Planning
Date Labels Demystified
I will not toss food once it is past the best buy date. "Expiration" dates misleadingly refer to quality, not safety. Use your senses and best judgement.
Planning
Food Donation
I will donate extra food. If you or your work place are hosting a catered event and have trays of extra edible food, there is no need to toss it. With a little planning your celebratory feast can help feed others.
Planning
Fridge Inventory
I will keep a fridge inventory to stay up to date with what I have in my fridge before I go grocery shopping.
Planning
Eat Me First
I will create an "Eat Me First" area in my fridge to prioritize food that needs to be used right away.
Food Waste Tracking
Food Waste Tracking
Ready. Set. Record!
For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Patrick Bowen 10/24/2019 6:56 PMHmmm... Not sure what to have for dinner. I ate pretty much most of the food and leftovers from the refrigerator already and I do not want to cook since it has been so hot today. Looks like tonight may be carryout, or cereal. 🤔-
Sarah Mosley 1/17/2020 1:30 PMI love cereal for dinner. :-D

Patrick Bowen 10/11/2019 1:39 PMI did not check in the past 2 days, but have been careful to reduce/limit food waste. I have been making sure to eat left overs and not cook more that I can consume prior to going bad. -
Patrick Bowen 10/08/2019 11:51 PMNo waste today! Made sure to eat left overs for dinner tonight to reduce risk of food going bad. -
Patrick Bowen 10/07/2019 10:52 PMHad an eclectic lunch today to make sure some produce did not go bad. Made a veggie salad, added leftover taco meat, and a side of day old popcorn.-
Geertje Grootenhuis 10/11/2019 1:20 PMReading your post got me thinking... there must be a way to revive stale popcorn! I did some googling and found this: https://www.thekitchn.com/this-is-the-best-way-to-revive-stale-popcorn-240536 I'm curious to try it!

Patrick Bowen 10/07/2019 10:49 PMOnly waste today we're a few orange peels and avocado peel. -
Patrick Bowen 10/06/2019 9:38 PMHad an interesting thought about the challenge and measuring food waste. It seems as though one may be penalized if you prepare your own food using fresh fruits and veggies due to having to weigh the parts that are not consumed (cores, peels, stems/seeds, etc.). If you purchased processed food, there would appear to be no waste. Hmmm... -
Patrick Bowen 10/06/2019 9:31 PMhad to throw away about 1.5 quarts of soup. I would have froze it, but was out of town and forgot to before I left. I was mostly liquid and some veggies, but it did weigh quite a bit. -
Patrick Bowen 10/05/2019 9:39 PMCamping with the kids this weekend. Waste was mostly orange peels and scraps from preparing meals. -
Patrick Bowen 10/03/2019 10:12 PMToday was not great. I got stuck in a working lunch meeting. The meals were prepackaged.prepackagedand there was not a gluten free option. Therefore, I chose a vegetarian option, ate the sides that were not breaded and had to throw away the rest. -
Patrick Bowen 10/02/2019 10:41 PMOnly food waste today was 2 banana peels.
