Chris's actions

Storage

Fridge Demystified

Did you know that milk should never be stored in the side door of a fridge? Learn where to properly store food in your fridge by checking out the Resource. I will properly store 4 cartons of milk.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Shopping

Eat Before Shopping

Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers. Resist impulse buys by shopping with a full stomach. Eat a snack or a meal before going grocery shopping.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Storage

Leafy Greens

Roll unwashed lettuce in a dry towel, then store in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. I will properly store 5 leafy greens.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Shopping

Support Imperfection

20 billion pounds of fruits and veggies go to waste on farms every year, often because they don't live up to the cosmetic standards of grocery stores. Buy ugly produce at the grocery store, farmers market, or sign up for an ugly produce CSA box.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Cooking

Swap This for That

Missing an ingredient for a recipe? Check this list to find the best substitutes.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Storage

Apples

Store apples up to 7 days on the counter, then move them to the refrigerator. Keep them away from bananas and avocados as they speed ripening. I will properly store 15 apples.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Watch Save The Food San Diego Videos

I will watch 4 Save the Food San Diego videos.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Storage

Berries

To keep berries fresh, place them on top of a paper towel in a sealed container to absorb excess moisture and reduce chances of molding. I will properly store 5 packs of berries.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Storage

Potatoes

Store potatoes with an apple to avoid early sprouting. Keep them away from onions and in a cool, dark place. I will properly store 20 potatoes.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Shopping

Shop More Often

Grocery shop more often, and buy fresh foods in smaller quantities.

COMPLETED 36
DAILY ACTIONS

Shopping

Scrutinize Deals

Five bananas for $1 is a good deal only if you eat all five. Many stores offer the sale price even if you buy less than the stated quantity.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Enroll in a Composting Workshop

I will sign up for a free composting workshop and learn more about how to get started composting.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Train Like a Chef

I will watch 4 online classes on "Creating a Full Use Kitchen" through the James Beard Foundation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food Systems

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Storage

Bananas

To keep bananas from browning quickly, break up the bunch and separate. Don’t store bananas with apples, which speed up ripening. If the stems came covered in plastic wrap, do not remove the plastic until ready to eat as this will slow the release of ethylene gas. I will properly store 15 bananas.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food Waste Tracking

Food Waste Tracking

Ready. Set. Record!

For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.

I was thinking about this challenge in the context of the virus, sheltering in place and the unrest in the country and realized just how important this challenge is with its timing; people are already or will be soon, paying more attention to eating healthier food and reducing costs for a multitude of reasons; we all need to learn these lessons in order to make these transitions easier

i am very appreciative for the opportunity to participate in this challenge.  unfortunately the timing was off, but i will be doing better now that my health has returned somewhat.  this is an amazing challenge and i believe the timing is perfect, in terms of people spending more time cooking at home during the pandemic.  thank you again

The timing for this challenge was the biggest challenge for me - but i'm recuperating nicely and expect to put a lot more effort into cooking, which is something i haven't been able to do.  This is the best challenge for me and i feel bad i'm not more present for it.
