I took note of the significant amount of food waste left on plates being removed from tables during the All Peoples Luncheon. My observations were not limited just to the table I was seated at during the event. The university should weigh all the food wasted after each sponsored event that serves food.

So while dining out with some friends the other night, I mentioned the Save the Food Ecochallenge. One person unabashedly claimed to being a food waster, professing to never taking anything home from a restaurant. Faced with the zero waste habits from the rest of us on display, this person then attempted to finish their rather large plate of food. It was an unnecessary exercise in gluttony before accepting that taking the uneaten food home was a much more pleasant option. Step one!

I have to admit, while I have been good about not wasting food for most of my adult life, this challenge brings clarity to the lifestyle of zero waste. #minimalist

I presume the Food Challenge applies to the department refrigerator, weighing out foods that are not consumed and end up getting disposed of during the weekly clean out.
