Food Waste Tracking
Food Waste Tracking
Ready. Set. Record!
For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.
Cooking
Veggie Scrap Stock
Store vegetable scraps in your freezer and use them to make veggie stock. I will make this recipe 1 times.
Community
Train Like a Chef
I will watch 1 online classes on "Creating a Full Use Kitchen" through the James Beard Foundation.
Planning
Fridge Inventory
I will keep a fridge inventory to stay up to date with what I have in my fridge before I go grocery shopping.
Shopping
Shop More Often
Grocery shop more often, and buy fresh foods in smaller quantities.
Shopping
Eat Before Shopping
Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers. Resist impulse buys by shopping with a full stomach. Eat a snack or a meal before going grocery shopping.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Planning
Date Labels Demystified
I will not toss food once it is past the best buy date. "Expiration" dates misleadingly refer to quality, not safety. Use your senses and best judgement.
Cooking
Cook From Root to Leaf
Utilize beet greens, carrot tops, and herb stems to make a delicious pesto, sauce, or dressing. I will try 3 root-to-leaf recipes.
Community
Watch Save The Food San Diego Videos
I will watch 3 Save the Food San Diego videos.
Cooking
Revive Limpy Produce
Rescue limpy produce like leafy greens or carrots by soaking in an ice bath.
Food Systems
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farmers market to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Community
Compost
I will compost my food scraps.
Planning
Dinner Party Guest-imator
I will use the Guest-imator to plan how much food to make for my upcoming dinner party with 4 guests.
Planning
Food Donation
I will donate extra food. If you or your work place are hosting a catered event and have trays of extra edible food, there is no need to toss it. With a little planning your celebratory feast can help feed others.
Food Systems
Stay Connected
Sign up for the San Diego Food System Alliance Newsletter to stay up to date on what's happening in the region
Food Systems
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food Systems
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Planning
Eat Me First
I will create an "Eat Me First" area in my fridge to prioritize food that needs to be used right away.
Shopping
Shop with Recipes In Mind
Create a shopping list with specific recipes and meals in mind. Purchase only what's on the list when you do groceries.

Rhea Webb 11/01/2019 1:39 PMHi everyone,
Happy November! I hope everyone had a spooky and fun Halloween! This holiday tends to have a lot of waste associated with it, but one cool tip to avoid food waste is to compost your carved pumpkin! In San Diego, there will be two drop-off locations for pumpkin composting today until 6 p.m. See below image for details and locations. -
Rhea Webb 10/11/2019 6:49 PMHey ya'll, our team is now ranked 9th in the whole competition, and 3rd among USD!! Congrats! Try to pick one new challenge to complete each week to learn more about how you can impact the food cycle. -

Rhea Webb 10/04/2019 1:41 PMEvery Saturday from 8am - 1pm the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market in downtown San Diego offers local, sustainable, and ethically caught seafood! They have multiple booths, including a delicious lunch booth from Loaves and Fishes (proceeds benefit those experiencing homelessness). One of the Eco challenges (Food Systems) is to spend 15 minutes learning more about smart seafood choices. Visit seafoodwatch.org and earn challenge points! -
Rhea Webb 10/03/2019 4:31 PMToday we had an event with catering and although some participants did not show up, instead of wasting the leftovers, the boxed lunches were donated to other faculty members. Diversion! -
Rhea Webb 10/01/2019 11:54 AMWoo hoo! Today is the first day of the EcoChallenge! Take some time to select a couple challenges for yourself this week. We will also be measuring our food waste at the end of each day. Feel free to bring in any food waste (scraps, peels, leftovers, etc. - except meat and dairy products) and we will weigh them and then divert them to a food composter. -
