Food Waste Tracking

Ready. Set. Record!

For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.

Food Systems

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Watch John Oliver Food Waste Episode

Watch a Last Week Tonight with John Oliver episode on the topic of food waste and learn about the scope and scale of the issue.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Storage

Bananas

To keep bananas from browning quickly, break up the bunch and separate. Don’t store bananas with apples, which speed up ripening. If the stems came covered in plastic wrap, do not remove the plastic until ready to eat as this will slow the release of ethylene gas. I will properly store 5 bananas.

Meal Prep Mania

I will meal prep 3 meals.

I feel like I am cheating - I have been getting Purple Carrot brand meal ingredients and recipes delivered - this completely eliminates food waste as everything is pre-measured. But the environmental cost may be that it has to be delivered and there is more packaging (although almost all is recyclable). Not sure how long we will stay with this service.

So we broke down and bought a small deep freezer so we can buy in bulk, save more leftovers and freeze things we would otherwise have to throw away. So far so good, but get concerned with the trade off - food waste vs energy consumption.

Much more waste than I hoped today, but tried harvesting and juicing wild prickly pear fruit, so had lots of skins left from the fruits - made my worms happy with lots of food for them!!

I think I’ve got the food waste down, with any waste going into my vermicompost (worm) bin. My bigger concern is the packaging waste. I am also wondering how the pandemic is changing how we get, eat and plan our food choices...and what impact that has on the planet (e.g., is ordering grocery delivery better than driving to the store yourself)?

Great reflections and questions, Kevin! The Washington Post published this article a few months ago about how our eating, shopping, and cooking habits have changed because of COVID, and what impact that has on food waste in the long-run. I'd recommend checking it out!

So I have gotten my 12 year old to cook dinner for us!! He loves the process and the responsibility that comes with cooking - although he doesn’t seem to like eating the food as much as preparing it😊. I’ll take what I can get!!

A bit confused about daily vs 1-time challenges.

Hi Kevin, I hope this helps. A one time challenge is marked completed after one time such as "re purpose leftovers".  A daily challenge like "revive limp produce"can be marked completed every day. In theory, one time challenges can and should be done each day, but the EcoChallenge only allows us to mark it competed once.

    Going well, but realizing the
    Challenging of getting kids
to not waste...open to suggestions for how to get kids to eat their food.

Kevin, how old are your kids? If young, maybe try a couple of books on not wasting food or where our food comes from? Also involve them in the meal prep, shopping & cooking as much as possible.  If they are a little older (& they like math??) they can calculate how much money was wasted on things thrown out. This money could go towards....their birthday gifts or a family trip or ??? This video is kind of fun too:  https://youtu.be/mn_dsgG0vKs   Good Luck!!
