Food Waste Tracking
Food Waste Tracking
Ready. Set. Record!
For each day during the food waste tracking week, record your food waste. This action accepts one entry per day, so be sure to enter one total for food waste across all of your meals, or weigh all of your food waste once at the end of each day. Please use ounces for unit of measurement.
Planning
Portion Planning
Use a portion size guide to ensure appropriate portions when cooking. I will cook 3 portion-appropriate meals.
Community
Let's Get Social
I will share a Save The Food social media post.
Planning
Befriend the Freezer
The freezer is your friend! Store any leftover food in the freezer for a quick weekday meal or freeze fruits that are getting ripe to use for a delicious smoothie later. I will freeze 3 food item(s).
Food Systems
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Storage
Asparagus/Celery
Trim the ends of asparagus and place them in a jar or glass with 1-2 inches of water, just like fresh cut flowers. Keep them in the refrigerator. I will properly store 1 bunches of asparagus/celery.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sandy Shamblin 5/27/2020 2:56 PMI bought supplies to make a cucumber salad recipe I saw online, but when I was done I had a lot of leftover ingredients that I don't normally use. Today I made deviled eggs with the leftover sour cream, dill, and Dijon mustard! Yay for reusing stuff and getting two recipes out of one batch of groceries! -
Sandy Shamblin 2/05/2020 1:22 PMHey everybody! San Diego Green Drinks' monthly meeting is on food waste this month! "Join San Diego Green Drinks on Thursday, February 20th at 6:00pm at EVE Encinitas (575 S Coast Hwy 101) as we discuss innovative ways that local organizations divert, repurpose, and allocate wasted food to close the food waste loop." https://www.eventbrite.com/e/food-waste-and-recovery-creating-value-out-of-wasted-food-tickets-92974658707?aff=ebdssbdestsearch -
Sandy Shamblin 1/30/2020 8:54 AMI used up my produce before leaving on vacation. Imagine my surprise when I came home and didn't have food! I'm excited to start my fridge out fresh. I think I'll move my vegetables to the front of the middle shelf so I can see them and grab them for snacking. -

Sandy Shamblin 10/17/2019 7:36 AMI got an email about the "Wasted Celebration" this weekend. It features local and national chefs/mixologists making food and drinks from ingredients that would typically be thrown out of their kitchens. Tickets are expensive but it sounds like such a great idea!
